MS NOW: Black Churchgoers Give Support to Haley Stevens in Michigan Senate Race

“This isn’t our first time seeing her….She’s immersed herself in her community, in our communities, and that holds a lot of weight as people are determining who they’re going to vote for.”

DETROIT, MI – In case you missed it, MS NOW highlighted Haley Stevens’ outreach to Black voters in Michigan, speaking with churchgoers after Haley addressed their congregation about what they value in a candidate and why Haley’s record of “doing what she saying she’s going to do to represent the people,” and “engrain[ing] herself in the community” are resonating with voters, which “hold a lot weight as people are determining who they’re going to vote for.”

My interviews with those churchgoers made clear why, one, Haley Stevens has been ramping up Black outreach in recent weeks, but two, why she’s been coming to churches specifically. You know, these churchgoers, as she was giving her remarks, they valued her history with former President Barack Obama. Stevens being part of his ‘08 recession recovery team. They valued the fact that she has high name recognition and has really ingrained herself in the community. I spoke to several people who would say things like, “This isn’t our first time seeing her. We’ve seen her at past events. She’s immersed herself in her community, in our communities,” and that holds a lot of weight as people are determining who they’re going to vote for. 

“I don’t think it matters as much as really proving to me that she’s doing what she says she’s gonna do to represent the people.” And that was a theme of many of my conversations with churchgoers: that hey, it’s all about her record.

It is worth noting… I spoke to the church official who has been facilitating candidate visits to the church. She says that Haley Stevens, as we saw today, accepted the offer and has come. She has not heard back from Abdul El-Sayed.
